(AOP) Alana Ola Pono Kauhale will have 43 tiny units (5 wheelchair accessible). All participants will have access to the Institute for Human Services' (IHS) supportive services and programs: health services, employment services, case management, and housing navigation. Single persons and couples may be eligible. 2 pets may be eligible to be in the Kauhale as well.

(Domestic Violence Advocacy) Families who are enrolled in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Temporary Assistance to Other Needy Families (more commonly known as “welfare”), are required to be engaged in activities that will ultimately lead them to self-sufficiency. Program recipients for whom issues of safety and domestic violence are interfering with their progress can call upon Domestic Violence Advocacy to help them find support to change their situations. Services include: assessment, service planning, counseling services, case management and linkage and referral. Provides client advocacy for women referred by Department of Human Services (DHS) in need of case management and support to leave domestic violent relationships. Six month time period given to provide victims the opportunity to gain focus and perspective of their personal goals and career choice.

Provides health education on topics such as diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, diet counseling and medication management. Offers outreach, family counseling, HIV testing and counseling. Sponsors the Hamakua Asthma Camp for children. Accepts insurance of all types. Provides flu and pneumonia vaccines (need to be seen by physician first). Also provides a smoking cessation program.

Provides immediate emergency assistance to victims of disasters, including food, shelter, clothing, crisis counseling and other services. Offers classes in CPR and first aid. For military personnel, provides emergency communication services, counseling and referral services. Provides international tracing service. Provides a comprehensive aquatics recreational program in the community. Facilities include a swimming pool. There are three program periods throughout the year: Fall, spring, and summer. The participants from 33 program sites receive a day filled with activities and excitement with a positive message on staying “Drug Free”. Participants learn the important values in self-esteem, nature lessons, social enhancement skills, utilizing creativity, teamwork and the importance of Staying Drug Free. Transitional Apartment Program (TAP) provides housing for victims who need safety and support and are ready to go to school/work. Program participants learn dynamics of domestic violence, develop safety plan, improve self-esteem and learn healthy parenting skills. Children develop safety plans and learn they’re not responsible for domestic violence. Length of stay varies depending on individual needs and up to 24 months at the Transitional Apartments.

Provides evening parenting classes specifically for parents who are under stress but is open to all parents.

Shelter of Wisdom rents homes which are shared by our men. Men live in double rooms with shared living areas and house chores. We provide intensive case management until our men are accepted into permanent housing. We provide household furnishings for their new homes, which are donated to us by the community. Men must maintain their sobriety, hygiene, medications, meal preparation, laundry, housekeeping and behavior.

Assists adoptees in search for family members. Maintains computer bank registry of adoptees and natural parents and other birth kin. Advocates for rights of adoptees. Operates a comprehensive residential treatment program for chemically dependent adolescents with length of stay ranging from 28 days to 1 year. Requires family participation in the multi-family group on Sunday afternoon (Oahu families must attend all sessions, while neighbor island families attend a minimum of once per month).

Provides health care services and other supportive health promotion and assistance. Assists with the Hawaii Health Connector for health insurance.

Receives all reports of child abuse or neglect. Provides case consultation and assessment. Provides crisis intervention on behalf of children in need of immediate protection.
